17 dating
•• * Слово dating, безусловно, заслуживает включения в словари. Это все-таки не просто ing-овая форма глагола to date в его специфически американском (но распространенном уже не только в Америке) значении to make or have social engagements with ( persons of the opposite sex) – кстати, в этом определении из American Heritage Dictionary последняя часть, может быть, уже устарела. И конечно, соответствие назначать свидание (единственный вариант, дающийся, например, в БАРСе и ABBYY Lingvo) явно недостаточно.
•• Возьмем такую фразу, звучащую по нынешним временам несколько старомодно:
•• What is a reasonable age for youths to begin dating? (Newsday).
•• В том же старомодном духе можно и перевести:
•• Когда, на ваш взгляд, подросткам можно начинать встречаться со сверстниками противоположного пола?
•• Пример из рассказа Стивена Кинга, где контекстуальный перевод напрашивается сам собой:
•• I don’t date, but I’m a fool for cologne. Go figure. – С женщинами я не встречаюсь, но без одеколона не могу. Странно, но факт.
•• Трудности перевода этого слова связаны с его «культурной эволюцией», с изменениями, происходящими в американском обществе в последние десятилетия.
•• Does anybody really “ date” anymore – are there still days ( and nights) of wine and roses? Or is the ‘90s pattern more likely to be fast food, then fast sex? - спрашивает газета USA Today.
•• Опять требуется контекстуальный перевод:
•• Неужели « ухаживание» - с романтическими встречами, вином и розами – ушло в прошлое? Похоже, в 90-е годы утверждается формула: быстро поели – и в койку.
•• И далее:
•• We’ll take a look at the ‘90s dating scene. – Посмотрим, где и как встречаются и знакомятся американцы в 90-е годы.
•• По моим наблюдениям, форма dating труднее в переводе, чем глагол to date. Вот несколько примеров из опубликованного недавно в журнале Atlantic интервью на эту тему:
•• ...the changing patterns of dating, mating, and union formation....the dating and mating behavior of contemporary single women has been neglected by the scholarly world so far....dating advice books. The interviews... were simply an effort to collect biographical, educational, and dating histories of the women who agreed to participate.
•• Если слово встречается в тексте с претензией на социологический анализ, то, как мне кажется, возможные варианты перевода – поиск и выбор партнера или, может быть, ухаживание. Соответствующие английские слова встречаются в этом же тексте сплошь и рядом как контекстуальные синонимы или как квазидефиниции dating: ...earlier eras when the courtship system was also in upheaval....the male biological clock ticks more slowly and men have more years to devote to their search....mating search......a mating system that will one day make finding a desirable partner straightforward and relatively easy for the new single woman.
•• Но наиболее подходящим во многих контекстах является простое русское слово знакомство (или знакомства), которое, правда, иногда монтируется в текст с некоторым усилием. Но, скажем, dating history – история знакомств – звучит на мой слух вполне нормально (но можно, наверное, и история отношений с мужчинами). The changing patterns of dating, mating and union formation – меняющаяся практика знакомств, выбора партнера и создания брачного союза.
•• Dating advice books – с этим сложнее. Может быть, Советы желающим познакомиться, Как вести себя на свиданиях. То, что у американцев довольно прагматично, «быка за рога», «дело житейское», у нас обрастает ассоциациями, может быть, и ненужными.
•• А вот еще одна замечательная фраза из того же интервью:
•• No one would dismiss the influence on dating of the automobile or the birth-control pill.
•• Здесь, я думаю, можно просто сказать влияние автомобиля и противозачаточных таблеток на отношения между мужчиной и женщиной, но можно и ...на практику ухаживания.
•• Вот интересные словосочетания, присланные одним из моих корреспондентов:
•• turbo dating = speed dating = fast dating = flash dating - может быть, «знакомство по-быстрому» или «на бегу»; экспресс-знакомство.
•• interracial dating: American teens view interracial dating, once a rarity in American society, as ‘no big deal’, a USA TODAY Poll shows.

Chantraine Form. 373; from this - ωθρίς f. `milleress' name of a comedy of Eubulos; - ωθρικός `belonging to a miller' (Plu.), - ωθρέω `grind' (Men.); backformation - ωθρον = μυλών (Phot.)?; also - ωθριαῖοι adjunct of καλυπ-τῆρες (= `roof-tiles'?; Delos IIa, reading uncertain); beside it μυλωρός `miller' (Aesop., Poll.), after πυλωρός a.o. 5. μυλάριον dimin. `small handmill' (pap.). 6. μυλεύς m. surn. of Zeus as keeper of mills (Lyc.; Bosshardt 67). 7. μυλίας m. ( λίθος) `millstone, stone, from which millstones were made' (Pl., Arist., Str.; Chantraine Form. 96). 8. μυλίτης m. ( λίθος, ὀδούς) `millstone, molar' (Gal.). 9. Μυλόεις ποταμὸς Άρκαδίας H.; s. Krahe Beitr. z. Namenforsch. 2. 233. -- B. Adj., all rare and late: 1. μύλ-ιος `belonging to a mill' (Procop.); 2. μυλ-ικός `id.' (Ev. Luk., Gal.); 3. - ινος `consisting of millstones' (Smyrna); 4. - αῖος `working in a mill' (AP), - αῖον n. `handmill' (pap.); 5. - ιαῖοι ὀδόντες `molars' (medic.); 6. - όεις `consisting of a millstone, belonging to a mill' (Nic., Nonn.); 7. - ητικη ἔμπλαστρος `remedy for toothache' (Gal.). -- C. Verbs, all rare. 1. μυλιάω only in ptc. μῡλιόωντες `gnashing with the teeth' (Hes. Op. 530; on - ιάω Schwyzer 732); 2. μυλόομαι `be hardened, cicatrized' (Hp.). -- On itself stands μύλλω = βινέω (Theoc. 4,58) with μυλ(λ)άς f. `whore' (Phot., Suid.), μυλλός m. `cake in the form of the pudenda muliebria' (Ath. 14, 647 a; Sicilian).Etymology: The primary verbal noun μύλη (accent as e.g. μάχη) with the secondarily arising μύλος (after λίθος or ὄνος ἀλέτης?) like the primary yot-present μύλλω deviate through the υ-vowel from the other cognate words for `grind', which show an e: o-vocalism: Celt., OIr. melim, Slav., e.g. OCS meljǫ (IE * mel-); Germ., e.g. Goth. malan, Lith. malù, Hitt. 3. sg. mallai (IE * mol-); Lat. molō, on itself ambiguous, prob. from * melō like OIr. melim. In μυλ- we must assume a zero- [or reduced] grade variant (ml̥-; mel-?) (Schwyzer 351). With μύλλω from *ml̥-i̯ō agree in Germ. OHG muljan, OWNo. mylia `crush'; on the meaning s. below, on the υ -vowel cf. φύλλον against Lat. folium. A weak grade appears also in Welsh malu `grind', as well as in Arm. malem `crush'. An u-vowel could also be found in the reduplicated Arm. ml-ml-em `rub'; (it could however also be drived from lengthened grade mēl- or mōl). The technical meaning `grind' might have been specialized from the general `rub'. As verbal noun μύλη has in Greek the character of an archaism, while μύλλω, which was degraded to an obscene meaning, was further replaced by the also old ἀλέω (s.v. and Porzig Gliederung 156), which was limited to the eastern languages. -- On itself stands μάλευρον (s.v.); remarkable and\/but suspect is the e-vowel of Myc. mereuro `meal' and meretirija `milleresses'. -- More forms in WP. 2, 284ff., Pok. 716f., W.-Hofmann and Ernout-Meillet s. molō, Fraenkel Wb. s. málti.Page in Frisk: 2,268-270Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μύλη

Grammatical information: m. f.Meaning: `big jar, esp. wine-jar' (IA.).Derivatives: Several diminutives: σταμν-ίον, - άριον n., - ίσκος m. (com., hell. a. late). Surname Σταμνίας m. (Ar.). Denom, verb σταμν-ίζω, only with κατα- and συν-, `to pour into a jar, to transfuse' (Thphr., Nic. a. o.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Formation like ἐρυμνός (: ἔρυμα), λίμνη (: λιμήν) a. o. (Schwyzer 524 and Chantraine Form. 215 with unfounded doubt (?) regarding the IE etym.). So prob. from a noun *στᾶμα, *σταμήν v. t. `stand, standing place'; prop. "destined to stand, fit for" as opposed to a jug to be carried. Thus στάτος m. (substantivized from στατός) `big jug' (hell. inscr., H.), OHG stanta `jug to be put somewhere', Lith. statìnė `barrel, cask'. A zero grade μ-derivation is also supposed in σταμῖνες (s. v.); comparable formations in other languages are Toch. B stām, A ṣtām `tree' (beside which with the original meaning stäm- `stand' in inf. stam-atsi etc.), OHG stam, gen. stammes `stem', which may stand for PGm. * stamna- (IE * sth₂-mn-o-) (and so would be formally identical with στάμνος), but which may also be explained diff.
